Artist Statement
Christophe de Callataÿ
My work unfolds at the intersection of painting, philosophy, and poetic imagination. I see painting not simply as a visual language, but as a way of thinking — a means of questioning who we are, where we come from, and what kind of world we are creating.
The Creation of the World (2020)
A Mosaic of the Human Condition
Each painting is conceived as a chapter within a larger, evolving narrative in which myth, history, nature, and contemporary life converge. Taken together, the works form a mosaic of the human condition, moving from the origins of the world toward an uncertain future shaped by our own choices.
I draw upon ancient cultures and mythologies from across the world, the intelligence and rhythms of nature, and the places where I have travelled and lived. Sacred animals, deities, symbolic landscapes, and archetypal figures inhabit my compositions, creating spaces where memory, imagination, and reflection intersect. My work is also an ongoing dialogue with the artists — anonymous and celebrated — whose visions have contributed to humanity’s shared cultural memory.
Color, Inquiry, and Poetic Presence
Color is at the heart of my language. I use vibrant, luminous palettes not only for their sensual and aesthetic force, but as an affirmation of life. Even when addressing environmental destruction, the illusion of power, the fragility of democracy, or the accelerating presence of technology, I seek to leave room for harmony, wonder, and hope.
Philosophy enters my practice as a way of engaging with fundamental questions of life, mortality, harmony, and happiness. "Poetry — as an unknown poet put it — is Van Gogh’s ear resonating with all the blood of the world".

Paintings with a Meaning
Each painting carries a title and subtitle that extend the conversation beyond the image. They are invitations to look — and live — more slowly, to interrogate the world, and perhaps to recognize that we are all part of stories that are both ancient and profoundly contemporary.
Ultimately, my paintings are an affirmation of humanity’s enduring capacity to imagine, question, and create. I believe art remains one of the rare spaces where beauty and critical thought, myth and memory, can coexist — opening new ways of seeing ourselves and the world we inhabit.
“A painter is someone who wipes the window between the world and us — with a cloth of light soaked in silence.”
